At Shefford Osteopathic Clinic, we offer a range of effective treatments alongside osteopathy.

Sports therapy is an aspect of healthcare specifically concerned with the prevention of injury plus the treatment and rehabilitation of patients.

We help to get you back to your everyday, work and exercise activities through the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of your complaint no matter what your age or ability.

Sports massage will help your body in three different ways (3 fancy ‘P’ words coming up):
• Physiological (basically the body’s internal systems – think heart rate and blood pressure)
• Psychological (your brain’s response), and the
• Physical response from our body (our muscles, tendons and ligaments – the bits that hurt).

10 Benefits of Sports Massage

1. Relaxation! Sports massage activates the parasympathetic system which is responsible for the inner workings of your body as mentioned above. Lots of benefits happen when we relax, many of which are listed below). Wahoo.

2. Stress relief! The body does not function properly when under stress. Massage reduces the production of stress hormones running through your body. This is very important to reduce unwanted injury and illness. And… breathe…

3. Improved circulation. By relaxing your muscles your blood supply increases allowing nutrients to be delivered to your muscles. Also allowing the body to remove any unwanted build up from the muscles. Healthy muscles here we come.

4. Reduced blood pressure – less stress, less tension and a more efficient vascular system. Win:Win.

5. Reduced muscle soreness – That terrible pain known as DOMS (Delayed onset of muscle soreness) the reason why you can’t move properly a day or two after a workout. Similar to the above reason waste products will be flushed from your muscles and the muscle tissue will relax helping them repair and in less pain. Yay.

6. Increased Lymph system activity. Unknown by many people, but this system is very important. It runs all through our body. Without it we’d all swell up like balloons. It collects excess fluid returning it to our blood and fighting off any nasty illnesses on the way, it constantly flushes out our body. One of the reasons why you will feel thirsty after a massage, drink up!

7. Feel good! Massage will release those wonderful chemicals called ‘Endorphins’. They make us feel better and reduce our pain. Excellent.

8. Reduced injury time. Massage allows injured muscles, tendons and ligaments to heal in the right way. It guides the growing new tissue ensuring a quality repair and reduces any unwanted scar tissue. Less time out of action.

9. More movement. Massage increases the movement of your joints by lengthening and stretching out your muscles. It also increases the synovial fluid inside the joints. We all make sure our cars have enough oil in them to run smoothly, it’s the same thing, very important or both cease up! Smooth, pain free movement. Bliss.

10. Improve your performance. For those active and sporty ones out there, massage will help increase your performance. Well-kept muscles will allow you to run faster, jump higher, swim further, walk longer, lift heavier, or improve that golf swing. You get the picture. Whatever your activity or sport, you will benefit. New PB?! Result.,

Sports massage helps to:
• Keep our muscles in working order
• Relieve various aches and pains
• De-stress our bodies
