Ankle injury - Post-operative treatment
A 28 year old lady came to the Shefford Osteopathic Clinic following the removal of a plaster cast the previous day. She had been in plaster after she dislocated her ankle and fractured her tibia and fibular (which had been pinned and plated).
Examination revealed that she had an inability to bear weight on the joint, a decreased range of movement of the ankle and foot and swelling. Following the first osteopathic treatment the patient was able to fully weight bear on her ankle, but still had pain in her foot when walking.
After the 3rd treatment, and 4 weeks after the cast was removed, the patient was able to drive a car and walk 2 miles a day. Her ankle and foot were easier to move but she still experienced some stiffness in the mornings; little if any pain remained.
Two months after the cast was removed the patient was back to a normal life and had started to gently run.
In total she had 5 treatments at weekly intervals and then 3 more over the next 2 months to check that all was okay.
